Chapter 5 - Now You Should Know Who Your Master Is

Chapter 5: Now You Should Know Who Your Master Is

Mammy Rong hummed a few times, trying to say something. However, because of the missing of her teeth, she couldn’t express herself clearly and could only shake her head hard.

Without a word, Mu Yingxue grabbed Mammy Rong by the hair and dragged her towards the laundry pool. Mammy Rong clung desperately to the step to prevent herself from falling into the water. Mu Yingxue lifted her foot, trampled on Mammy Rong’s hand and ground it hard, which crushed all the bones of the latter’s fingers. Before Mammy Rong could let out a cry, Mu Yingxue pressed her head into the pool.

Mammy Rong choked and her screams disappeared in the freezing water. Now she could do nothing except for flapping the water with her arms in vain.

Seeing that Mammy Rong stopped struggling gradually, Mu Yingxue grasped her hair and lifted her head out of the water.

“How does it feel?”

Mammy Rong had already been scared out of her wits, so when she heard Mu Yingxue’s voice ring again, she instinctively tried to break free from her grip and flee.

“Trying to escape? No way!”

Disregarding Mammy Rong’s shaking head and pleading eyes, Mu Yingxue pressed her head into the pool again. It wasn’t until she felt that Mammy Rong was breathing her last that she lifted her out of the water again.

Mammy Rong’s face turned ghastly pale and the water oozed out from her mouth, nostrils and ears. She rolled her eyes slightly, which became bleak when she saw Mu Yingxue’s stern look.

“I can help you if you don’t want to live. Remember, never mess with me or anyone I care about in your next life. Or you’ll know how it feels to live in hell!”

With that, Mu Yingxue threw Mammy Rong into the pool, who was immediately submerged in the water. After struggling for a short while, she completely sank into the pool.

Watching how merciless Mu Yingxue was when she killed Mammy Rong, Mammy Xing was so scared that her face turned gray as if she saw a devil in front of her.

“Miss Yingxue, please forgive me. I dare not offend you again. My old parents and children are waiting for me to bring home the bacon, so please have mercy on me!”

Mu Yingxue remained indifferent. “Now you know how to distinguish the master from servants, huh?”

“Miss Yingxue, don’t kill me! Please!”

When she saw Liu’er and Ouyang Ruo help Mammy Qiao walk over, Mammy Xing turned around in haste. She grabbed Ouyang Ruo by the hem of her skirt and begged, “Madam Ouyang, please spare my life! Please!”

Though Ouyang Ruo thought that Mammy Rong and Mammy Xing deserved it, now that Mammy Rong had been drowned, she was worried that Mu Yingxue might get into trouble if she killed both of them. So she persuaded, “Ying’er, I think Mammy Xing has learn the lesson today.”

However, Mu Yingxue didn’t show the slightest intention to let go of Mammy Xing. “A wicked servant who dares to bully her master deserves death!”

Mammy Xing banged her head onto a stone slab and begged, “Miss Yingxue, please give me a chance.”

“I can let you go, but you have to give me a reason.”

Mammy Xing had worked in the mansion for years and she was very experienced. Hearing what Mu Yingxue said, she knew there was still room for negotiation, so she immediately promised, “Miss Yingxue, if you spare my life, I’d like to work for you and I swear I’ll have nothing to do with Concubine Song anymore.”

Mu Yingxue smiled, feeling satisfied with her answer.

“For my mom’s sake, I won’t kill you today. But if I ever see you pulling off similar tricks again, I will personally see to it that you and your family will end up like Mammy Rong.”

“So you know what to do next?”

“Miss Yingxue, I do, I swear!”

Then Mu Yingxue and Liu’er helped Ouyang Ruo and Mammy Qiao respectively, heading for their courtyard. Watching them disappearing into the night, Mammy Xing heaved a sigh of relief and it was not until then did she notice that her hair and clothes had all been soaked with sweat.

When they returned to their shabby yard, it was already late at night.

Seeing them get changed, Liu’er told Ouyang Ruo and Mammy Qiao about Mu Yingxue’s regaining of her intelligence. The two were thrilled and Mammy Qiao even knelt on the floor and kowtowed three times to the sky.

“My poor Ying’er, your suffering is finally over!”

“Justice from the heavens! Justice from the heavens!”

Mu Yingxue sighed inwardly when she saw Ouyang Ruo’s loving eyes. In her previous life, her mother died trying to save her, which became her permanent sore spot. Though Ouyang Ruo didn’t resemble her mother in appearance, she could sense the intense maternal love from the way she looked at her.

“Mom, Mammy Qiao, I’ll keep all of you safe and never let anyone bully you in the future.”

After a busy day, Mu Yingxue slept soundly at night. The next morning, Liu’er came in and waited upon her while telling her the shocking news—Mammy Rong fell into the laundry pool and drowned by accident on her way to the restroom. Mu Yingxue only smiled without saying anying.

At the thought of what had happened last night, Liu’er couldn’t conceal her admiration for Mu Yingxue. “Miss, what made you so confident that Mammy Xing wouldn’t spilt the beans?”

“Mammy Xing is smart enough to know that even if she did, nobody would believe her and she would lose her life and end up more miserable than Mammy Rong. So she dared not reveal it to anyone.”

After folding the quilt, Liu’er brought a basin of water in and helped Mu Yingxue wash up. Only then did Mu Yingxue saw her own face in the reflection of the water.

This girl was almost the miniature version of her in her previous life. In spite of her childlike appearance, she was rather pretty and delicate. However, because of the poor living condition, she was too thin, looking like a malnourished bean sprout.

“Where’s my mom?”

“She’s waiting for you to have breakfast in the outer room.”

“Then I’ll go right now.”

When she opened the door, she found that it was no longer snowing outside, but the weather was still overcast. At this point, the butler, Mu Wanfu and Xu Min’s personal maid, Hongyu, walked in with a bunch of maids and young servants following behind them. They brought a pile of fine porcelain, jade articles, screens, mahogany tables and chairs into the house, and even replaced the teapot with a purple clay one.

Then Mu Wanfu asked those servants to replace the broken windows and the gate, hang the red lanterns on the trees in the yard, which made the house take a new look as if it had suddenly changed from a slum to a magnificent palace.

Mu Wanfu didn’t leave with those maids and servants until Hongyu nodded with satisfaction. From the beginning to the end, he didn’t say a word to the owner of the courtyard and didn’t even cast a glance at anybody here, as if Mu Yingxue, Ouyang Ruo, Mammy Qiao and Liu’er were invisible.

Before leaving, Hongyu said, “The Spring Festival is coming. Madam Xu is going to have two suits made for the masters of each courtyard. Madam Ouyang, go to the front yard with Miss Yingxue after breakfast, and the maids will take your measurements there. You’d better hurry! You know how Madam Xu can be if you keep her waiting for too long! By the way, the furniture and decorations are precious. Be careful not to break them.”

Mu Yingxue asked in confusion, “Mom, what are they doing?”

Ouyang Ruo stroke Mu Yingxue’s head gently while letting out a sigh. “She will be like this whenever the marquis is going to return. It’s been going on for years.”

Her dad, the scumbag, was going to come back to celebrate the Spring Festival with them? In her memory, Mu Yunxiao hadn’t returned to the mansion in a few years.

After breakfast, Mu Yingxue and Ouyang Ruo went back to their own rooms to change clothes. However, after rummaging around for a long time, Mu Yingxue only found a dress barely fit to wear. Other clothes were either too wrinkled or too small.

Anyway, she was the daughter of the marquis. According to the rules of the mansion, she ought to get four sets of new clothes, a set of jewelry and a set of headwear each season. But she had never seen any of them at all.

“No wonder that Xu Min is going to have new clothes made for mom and me. Humph! I’ll definitely have her return what she stole from us!”
