10. I Killed Them

Translator: Snowball

Luo Wu answered with a dismissive look on his face, “It hasn’t been long since I received the report, so I’m not sure what happened.”

After all, Song Zhong had been an official for years, so overwhelmed with grief at his son’s death as he was, he didn’t lose his mind. Hearing what Luo Wu had said, he immediately asked, eyes burning with anger and hatred, “Lord Luo, do you know who’s the murderer? Have you caught him?”

“We haven’t captured the murderer or any suspects yet.”

Song Zhong shot to his feet and rushed to Luo Wu. “The murder took place in your jurisdiction. As the Governor of the capital city, how can you even fail to catch a suspect?” he questioned with a ferocious look, grabbing Luo Wu by the collar.

Although Song Zhong was the Assistant Minister of National Defense, he wasn’t Luo Wu’s direct supervisor, so Luo Wu wasn’t afraid of him at all.

“Lord Song, I’m sorry for your loss. But please don’t be too sad. When I arrived at the hut with my men, I saw Miss Xiangqin on the top of Childe Song, and they were both almost naked with scratches on their bodies. After further examination, we found Miss Xiangqin’s fatal injury was caused by the whip she took with her, while Childe Song died from a broken neck. We found no trace of anyone else around, so we’re assuming they beat each other to death,” Luo Wu said in an ironic tone.

Then he took the whip from one of his attendants and added, “When we took off the whip wrapped around Childe Song’s neck, we saw blood on it. However, Childe Song didn’t have any visible injuries. We only spotted distinct marks of whipping on Miss Xiangqin’s chest.”

Having spoken that much, Luo Wu actually just wanted to hint that the two were too excited in the middle of their intimacy and they killed each other by accident.

Beating each other to death?! Lord Luo was already putting it mildly, but Song Zhong, Mrs. Song and Song Wanrou couldn’t accept the conclusion.

“Impossible! My lord, I don’t believe it…”

Song Zhong flared up and rushed to Luo Wu again. He stared at Luo Wu while shaking him desperately. “You have to reinvestigate the case! I can’t accept such a ridiculous conclusion!”

“Lord Song, if you don’t trust me, you can find someone else to verify it on your own.”

“You… I’m going to report to His Majesty! As the Governor of the capital city, how can you be so perfunctory in handling the case!”

Instead of being intimidated, Luo Wu revealed a sneer on his lips. “Lord Song, even if you report to His Majesty, my conclusion will be the same. You can ask someone to examine whether the wounds on their bodies were caused by the reason I said or not again. Now that I have delivered their bodies here, I’ll take my leave now.”

With that, Luo Wu turned to leave in a huff with his attendants, the contempt in his eyes even more obvious.

Watching his beloved son’s ashen face and half-open eyes, Song Zhong staggered a few steps backward before collapsing onto the chair.

When she heard that her only son had died on Mu Xiangqin’s bed, Mrs. Song was completely out of her mind. She dashed over, lifted a chair from the floor and threw it towards Mu Xiangqin’s body.

Song Wanrou nearly got struck by the chair. She immediately threw the chair away and grappled with her sister-in-law.

“You bitch! Your daughter is also a slut! She killed my son, so you have to pay for my son’s life!”

“You twat! My daughter is a nice girl. If it weren’t for your son, she wouldn’t have lost her life! I’m going to strangle you!”

“Bah! If she were a nice girl, she wouldn’t have seduced my son! Shameless wanker!”

Mrs. Song was a shrew. As his father was a low-rank official in the military army, she had learned some basic combat skills, so Song Wanrou was no match for her at all and soon she was left black and blue.

Xu Min was so angry that in addition to the pain in her face and teeth, her stomach began to ache as well. She banged the table with her hand while roaring in rage, “Stop! Isn’t that humiliating enough? Lord Song, you’d better watch your family. Don’t forget you’re at the Marquis Mu’s Mansion now!”

Actually, Song Zhong didn’t mind the affair between Song Qingyun and Mu Xiangqin. If it weren’t for his sister, Song Wanrou’s relationship, he wouldn’t have become a high-rank official, so it would be helpful to his career if his son could marry Marquis Mu’s daughter.

However, his dream was broken now, and his son had died because of that slut, so he was clear that it was impossible for the two families to get along well with each other like before. As their relationship had completely been ruined, he decided to put up a desperate fight.

Song Zhong revealed a malicious smile, the muscles in his face twitching. “People of the Mu’s Mansion has pushed me too far! After all, my son died on the hill behind your mansion. Shouldn’t you give me an explanation?”

“Ha! Ridiculous! Your son ruined the reputation of Marquis Mu’s daughter. How dare you ask me for an explanation? I think it’s the other way around!”

“Since my son died in the Mu’s Mansion, I have every reason to suspect everyone here!” Now Song Zhong had lost his wits.

Xu Min shivered with anger. “Fine! The marquis will give you an explanation after he comes back!”

“Stop putting on airs! When the marquis comes back, I’ll definitely come again and confront him!” He then turned to his wife and said, “Take our son. Let’s go!”

Xu Min clenched her teeth in anger, but before Marquis Mu returned, she could do nothing for the moment except for watching Song Zhong leave with his men.

Song Wanrou held Mu Xiangqin’s body in her arms and almost cried her heart out, her face too swollen to show its original appearance, her hair as messy as a bird’s nest.

“Stop crying! Don’t you feel ashamed of being here?! Our mansion has been humiliated to the extreme because of your daughter! A maiden from a noble family had an affair with a man and died in the adultery. Song Wanrou, I can’t imagine how you usually educated your daughter! Servants, inform everyone of my punishment decision—as Mu Xiangqin disgraced our family, she will be expelled from our mansion! As Song Wanrou was incapable of disciplining her daughter, she’ll be beaten twenty times with sticks. And I’ll see what I shall do with her after the marquis comes back.”

If Mu Xianqin was expelled from the Mu’s Mansion, it meant her body would be thrown into the wilderness. No funeral would be held for her and she wouldn’t even have a gravestone. “Madam, you can’t treat her this way! After all, Xiangqin is the marquis’ daughter, the honorable milady of our mansion!” Song Wanrou protested.

“From now on, she isn’t! She’s shameless, but it’s unfair to get other girls of our mansion implicated. I won’t allow her to discredit our household!”

Song Wanrou revealed a malicious smile on her face. “Madam, I can’t believe you’re so selfish! Actually, you’re just worried that your daughter might be affected!”

Hearing that, Xu Min turned to leave angrily, while Song Wanrou collapsed onto the ground, unconscious.

After watching a big show, Mu Yingxue was in a good mood. When she followed Ouyang Ruo back to their yard, Ouyang Ruo asked her to go to her room. She looked at Mu Yingxue with an extremely gentle look in her eyes, without saying a word, which made Mu Ying feel so uneasy that her hair stood on end.

After quite a while, Ouyang Ruo asked, “What did you let Liu’er out of our mansion for?”

“Nothing special. I just asked her to fetch something for me.”

Letting out a sigh, Ouyang Ruo continued, “Though my status is low in the mansion and I never argued with those people who bullied me, I’m not stupid. You asked Liu’er to report to Lord Luo about the murder, didn’t you? It’s impossible for ordinary people to get into the plum garden behind the Mu’s Mansion, so I guess you must have something to do with Mu Xiangqin and Song Qingyun’s death. Or even you’re the murderer!”

Mu Yingxue’s heart skipped a beat. She didn’t expect that Ouyang Ruo wasn’t as weak as she appeared, and she was so sensitive!

Since Ou Yangruo had seen her through, Mu Yingxue didn’t want to hide the secret from her anymore. She looked into Ouyang Ruo’s eyes and answered, “You’re right. I killed them!”
