General’s Aide Mentioned.

Around the time the western sky was dyed red, General Gastagyu began to make preparations to return home, looking emotionless but clearly eager to leave as soon as the clock hit the end of the workday. He was the type of person who didn’t want to spend a second longer at work than necessary. I wondered if he hated his job, or if he just loved being at home. Probably both.

But I couldn’t complain since he always did his work properly. Before the end-of-work bell disappeared like the wind, I brought up a personal matter.

“Thank you for the dinner the other day, Your Excellency Gastagyu.”

“Hmm. I don’t remember inviting you.”

He was unexpectedly sharp-tongued.

“I’m sorry I didn’t bring a gift. Please enjoy this assortment of confections from the popular patisserie in the capital, with Michelle.”

I handed him the sweets, knowing that the general wouldn’t eat sweet things, but it’s safer to give gifts that suit the taste of the woman, right?

“You don’t have to go out of your way.”

The general, who received it with a typical expression of his, seemed… strangely happy.

“By the way, Michelle is quite reliable for someone so young. How old is she?”

“She said she’s 18. She didn’t get upset when I asked.”

Ah, she remembered the warning I gave her before. But I only taught her the manners of society, I didn’t say that the employer couldn’t ask his employees.

But 18 is such a charming age. I understood from the general’s attitude that he wasn’t surrounding her as a mistress, but… Those two have such a good atmosphere, are they really not dating?

My curiosity began to stir. I’ll try to tease him a little bit more, without getting myself killed.

“Does Michelle have a boyfriend?”

“I don’t know. I’ve never asked.”

Ask! That’s important!

“Really? Then, can I go after her?”

“You want to go after her…?”

Suddenly, General Gastagyu furrowed his brow and glared at me with the eyes of a fierce wolf.

“Do you want to die?”

What’s wrong with him?

I couldn’t help but be amazed at the way he looked at me, even though I was about to shrink away in fear.

“Why do you have such a dangerous idea? To pursue someone means to ask if you can flirt with them.”

“Well, just say that then.”

The general looks annoyed, but it’s usually conveyed through my lines.

“Do you have feelings for Michelle, Thomos?”

“Well, if a girl is as cute and kind as Michelle, you’d want to date her. Don’t you feel the same way, Your Excellency?”

“I don’t know.”

…What doesn’t he know? Is he not interested in romance, or is he clueless?

“What do you think of Michelle, Your Excellency?”

“I recognize her as someone I can trust to take care of the household.”

That’s the textbook answer.

“Is that all?”

“What do you mean, ‘is that all’?”

“I mean, how do you see her as a woman? Even from my first meeting with her, Michelle is an attractive girl. Other men won’t leave her alone. There’s a possibility that one day she might suddenly marry someone else. Are you prepared for that?”

At my heated mention of this, the general looks flustered but serious…

“Michelle… marrying someone else?”

“At that time, should I prepare the dowry for her?”

“Why would you do that?!?!?”

Oops, I blurted that out loud.

“Isn’t the dowry something that the parents prepare? Why are you acting like a protective father, Your Excellency?”

He’s just an employer, but he’s determined to arrange the marriage.

“Well, Michelle has taken care of me, so I thought I should do the same for her.”

“But it’s Michelle’s job to take care of you as a servant.”

She is just an employee after all.

“That’s true, but… the truth is, Michelle was the one who created a place where I could truly feel at ease for the first time, even though I only knew the battlefield. Is it presumptuous of me to want her to be happy?”

“…”

…Just get married already.
