Failed The First Time.

When I got back home, I prepared dinner.

First, bread. This morning it was white bread, so I decided to make rye bread for dinner.

My family didn’t allow me to make only white bread because white bread looks more expensive. But I also like the savory taste of rye. I hope Schwarz-sama will be pleased.

Combine the other ingredients in a 5:5 ratio of flour and rye flour, and knead it diligently. While waiting for fermentation, I began working on the main dish.

I pulled the guts out of the whole trout, seasoned it with salt and pepper, and stuffed it with as many herbs and vegetables as I could find. Then, I grilled the trout in a grill pan with a lid, and the herb-steamed trout was ready. Thank goodness this is an aristocratic mansion with large cooking utensils.

I made potato and onion potage soup, and since he seems to like the crunchy texture, I shredded lettuce and chopped tomatoes right before serving the raw vegetable salad.

The rye bread, which I formed into a larger loaf than this morning, was packed just enough to fit in the oven.

All the government offices close in the evening, so it’s about time for Schwarz-sama to come home.

A delicious smell wafted out from the grill pan and from the oven.

Would be great if it is just freshly made and ready to serve at the table.

I waited anxiously for the General’s return…

“…It’s getting late.”

My muffled voice echoed through the kitchen.

It was dark outside the window.

“Is he busy with work? Or did he get lost? No way, he might have collapsed from a sudden illness…”

I stood up, sat down, and walked around again and again, as many selfish imaginations came into my head.

“Maybe I should go and find him. But it would be annoying for him If went to his workplace…”

I said out loud and restrained myself from going out of control.

A little while longer, a little more, and he’ll be back. I’m sure he will…

I plopped down on the table and told myself that, and before I knew it, I was being pulled into sleep.

***

“-ey… Hey!”

I was shaken on the shoulder from behind, and I was awakened.

What’s that? Where am I? Ah, I see. I’m in the kitchen of the Gastagyu’s mansion.

“You’ll catch a cold if you sleep here.”

When I turned around, I saw Schwarz-sama’s face with a furrowed brow. I …fell asleep while waiting for him.

What time is it now? Probably midnight. Since he returned so late, he must be hungry.

“Welcome back. I will serve you dinner right away.

As I hurriedly got up, the general replied casually,

“Ah, I’ve already eaten dinner with my men.”

…Ehh?

I felt the blood rush.

He probably just got home. I watched in amazement as the general took off his coat as if nothing had happened.

…Ahh right. Schwarz-sama has his own social life. There must be times when he doesn’t dine at home.

It’s my fault for not confirming it before he left this morning.

I was so excited and excited, and then I was disappointed.

I’m such an idiot…

I fell silent in shock, and Schwarz-sama peeked at me suspiciously.

“You don’t feel good? You should go back to your roo…”

As he was speaking, he… froze like a stone. In his line of sight, he saw a pile of bread in a basket and a platter of trout.

“Aaahhhh—!”

Schwarz-sama exclaimed, clutching his head.

“Oi, don’t tell me this is my dinner!?”

Ah, he has noticed.

Making the master feel uncomfortable was the worst thing I could do as a servant.

“No, um, yes. But it’s no problem at all…”

As I tried to mend my clumsy attempts to make things right, Schwarz-sama ruffled his hair and then said,

“Sorry!”

He bowed his head so hard that his forehead was almost stuck to his knees.

“It never occurred to me that you might be cooking dinner, Michelle. That’s right. I left the house this morning without saying anything, so it’s natural for you to prepare it. And yet I just ate out, out of habit.”

“No! It’s fine! Please raise your head!”

The master’s behavior had me in a panic.

“It is not something that Schwarz-sama should be concerned about. It was my own misunderstanding.”

I tried hard to calm him down, but he said, “No,”

“This is my fault. I failed to communicate with you. One miscommunication can destroy a whole division.”

I will not be destroyed, so don’t worry. I was just… a little… heartbroken.

“I didn’t understand what it meant to have a live-in worker. From now on, I will tell you my schedule in advance. I’m really sorry. Please forgive me.”

“Forgive you…? but I haven’t been… mad at you from the beginning.”

I was troubled to see how depressed Schwarz-sama was.

When he recognized that he was at fault, he bowed down to me, his servant, without hesitation. I don’t know if it’s a dignified thing for a general, but… I think he was amazing…

“It’s late, so please go to sleep. I’m going to clean up a little and then go to bed.”

I smiled, and Schwarz-sama frowned at me.

“But …Maybe, Michelle, you were waiting for me and didn’t eat your own food?”

*Smile*

“That’s not…”

I tried to cover it up by laughing, but…

*Stomach Grumbling*

Geez! You’re not reading the air again, my stomach!!

As I turned redder than an apple, Schwarz-sama peacefully narrowed his eyes at me.

“It’s late, but we’re going to have dinner now.”

“Ehh? You’ve eaten, haven’t you?

“About a fish, not a number of things. I’m in the mood for a drink. Join me.”

It’s a pretty big trout…

…And he doesn’t want me to dine alone and lonely…

“I don’t drink, but I’ll join you.”

I’m not mad at all… but maybe this will make up for it.

“Come to think of it, I found a couple of bottles of wine in the warehouse that look old. I hope they haven’t turned to vinegar.”

“Guess I’ll check it.”

Schwar-sama raised the corners of his mouth mischievously.

We opened a bottle of vintage wine and had a fine banquet with steamed trout.

The trout was completely cold, but it was many times better than when I made it at… my parents’ house.

*The uneaten bread and side dishes became breakfast the next day.*
