The Eagle of Eastern Europe

Chapter 98 Ottoman or Hungary

"Your Highness, the Venetian envoy has left."

"So soon, I want to invite him to Constanta."

Peter looked at the gift from Venice with some regret. These are all priceless, and he hasn't returned the gift yet.

"Silk from Naples, spices from the East, and gold from Egypt. It seems like a lot of money was spent."

Peter knew that the effect he wanted had already appeared. If these two countries reach different results, they will naturally lose their short-term friendship.

Although some interests will be damaged by signing an agreement with these two countries, the comparison with the Roman Empire is still very good. At least they are not tax-free.

"Well, life has to go on, otherwise you will lose your way."

Peter didn't know where he got the famous quote, which made his men confused, but they still agreed. After all, he does his job well.

On the other hand, Grand Duke Mircea was discussing things about Hungary and the Ottomans. It is too uncomfortable for Wallachia to be sandwiched between these two countries. If you want to expand your territory, you must choose one of these two countries.

"Your Highness, I suggest that we continue to put pressure on Serbia, and it is best to make them completely surrender to our country."

"No, Serbia is protected by the Ottomans. If they intervene forcefully, it will cause a new war."

The ministers started arguing with each other. Faced with the complex international situation, Wallachia must break through it. Hungary and Ottoman are the best choices.

The reason for choosing the Ottomans is simple. Religious and geographical conflicts on both sides are the first. After the Treaty of Derekoi, Wallachia also captured several cities from the Ottomans, which made some people think that the armistice at that time was not a wise move.

However, a skinny camel is bigger than a horse, and Ottoman's body is still more than four times that of Wallachia. If we continue to attack the Ottomans, it is difficult not to be dragged to death by the Ottomans. What's more, there is still a peace treaty, and Wallachia cannot be the one to break the treaty.

Since the Ottomans can't do it, it's Hungary. Wallachia has some claims from Transylvania, and the two countries have been at loggerheads over this place since independence in 1330. Because this involves historical issues.

More than a thousand years ago, this was the Kingdom of Dacia, the predecessor of Wallachia, Moldova and Transylvania. It was later annexed and spit out by the Roman Empire, followed by the expansion of the Kingdom of Hungary. Transylvania became a principality of Hungary, and the ethnic policies carried out by successive rulers made the local Vlach majority very unhappy. And if we send troops to Hungary to capture this place, it will be regarded as realizing the wishes of our ancestors and the people. And the local rich mineral resources will also improve the economy, which is very good.

But there will be a series of problems when visiting Hungary, such as where to enter. The two countries are separated by the Carpathian Mountains, which makes it difficult to cross. Unless we can borrow passage from Serbia and Poland, and if we want to pass through Serbia, we have to capture Belgrade, which is impossible in less than a year.

It can be seen from this that whether you are fighting the Ottomans or Hungary, you must have good dealings with the other country. Otherwise it's easy to get stabbed in the back.

Mircea looked at the quarrelsome people and then spoke to stop them.

"Look at you, you are noisy and you still look like nobles. This is a conference hall, not a market."

As soon as Mircea said this, the others immediately stopped arguing and turned their attention to the Archduke. I want to see how Mircea decides.

"Although we have some issues with Hungary, we can still ignore it in front of the Ottomans. The Ottomans are still menacing at the moment. Before completely defeating them, making good friends with Hungary is the right choice."

The Grand Duke has said so, and then the foreign policy is basically determined. And Mircea still had something to say.

"If we can ask Hungary to send troops to Serbia in the next war, then our pressure will be much less."

This made the ministers find it incredible how easy it was for Hungary to send troops. Especially the defeat in Skopje.

"I know what you are all thinking, what if the reward is to divide Serbia and Bosnia equally?"

Mircea threw a shock bomb. These areas cover more than 30,000 square kilometers, which is a lot of territory. And this is actually Wallachia's reward for inviting Hungary to send troops. Can't they ask for it?

Serbia knows it very well, but this Bosnia is a bit unfamiliar. In the 7th century AD, the Slavs immigrated to present-day Bosnia and later formed principalities such as Bosnia, whose leader was called Rupan. In the 10th century, it surrendered to Serbia, Croatia and Bulgaria. After the fall of the Kingdom of Western Bulgaria in 1018, it came under the rule of Eastern Rome. In the second half of the 11th century, Bosnia was merged into the Kingdom of Croatia and the Kingdom of Duklia (Zeta). It was conquered by Hungary in 1137, and the Hungarian king appointed Baan to manage the area.

From 1180 to 1204, during the reign of Baan Kulin, Bosnia gained independence from Rome and used the Bogomil sect to get rid of the rule of the Roman Catholic Church. In the mid-13th century, the Bogomilist Church in Bosnia finally defeated the Roman Catholic Church. From 1299 to 1322, it was ruled by the Shubic family of Croatia. In 1322, Stepan II of the Cotmarmanich dynasty overthrew the Shubic family and ruled Bosnia. In 1326, it annexed Hum and gained access to the sea. After his nephew Tefortko I succeeded to the throne in 1353, he took advantage of the decline of Serbia and Hungary to occupy large areas of territory in Serbia, Croatia and the Adriatic coast. In 1377, he was crowned "Serbia and Bosnia" King", later also called "King of Dalmatia and Croatia", the Principality of Bosnia became the Kingdom of Bosnia.

Bosnia is rich in mineral resources, mainly including coal, iron, copper, manganese, lead, mercury, silver, lignite, bauxite, lead-zinc ore, asbestos, rock salt, barite, etc. Its terrain is mountainous, which is one of the reasons why Bosnia broke away from the rule of various countries.

Prime Minister Angel expressed support for Mircea's idea, because Wallachia's strength cannot rule such a vast land, and it needs to be done step by step. And the new territory has not been ruled for a few years, and it is necessary to expand the territory again. Whether it can be ruled, is it not afraid of losing what was previously gained?

Therefore, giving these places to Hungary is a very good choice. This would satisfy Hungary, and their rule would be as oppressive as it treated other peoples, thus reducing resistance to Wallachia's rule here.

"That's it for now. I believe the Hungarians will not refuse." After all, the expansion of territory is just around the corner, so how could they refuse such a huge contribution.

Moreover, it is impossible for them to reject the benefits of these new lands.
