Chapter 13 Annoyance (Extra Episode 1)

A curse for parents, a son by adoption, be blessed by misfortune, be rich and powerful.

The thirteen-year-old Ye Lin was fooled by the fortune teller. He was worried because it coincided his own doubts.

When he was a child, he lived with his grandparents and rarely saw his parents.

In his memory, the parents seemed to appear out of nowhere. He felt like one day, a man and a woman came up to him, and both his grandparents said that they were his parents. So he agreed that they were.

But his parents only visited him on weekends. When he was seven years old, his younger brother Ye Chong was born. His parents would come to see the grandparents and him with their little son. In the evening, they would go back home with Ye Chong, but never took Ye Lin with them. There was only once, they left Ye Chong at grandparents' home for several days. His grandma said that it was to wean his younger brother. After that, they took him back. Ye Lin asked them, why didn't they take me home? I've been weaned for years.

He didn't move to his parents' home until he was in junior high school. Seeing the unfamiliar room, being with his parents and brother, who have barely spoken to him, he felt a real sense of alienation.

On the contrary, he was very close to his uncle. When he was a child, his uncle liked him and spent a lot of time with him. As long as he could remember, his uncle would come to his grandparents' house every day after work, teach him to count the numbers and read the poems. When he was four years old, his uncle brought him to visit the Forbidden City, told him names and stories for each palace. At the weekend, the uncle always took him to the National Museum, or went to a concert or opera with him. His uncle bought him toys and made him become the richest boy in the yard. He also bought him books, so that he could read the books written by Adam Smith, Montesquieu, Marx and Machiavelli before he graduated from the primary school. But then, his uncle went to another city to work, he could only call back sometimes. But every time, he would talk to Ye Lin and ask how his study was.

Ye Lin's uncle had a special position in their family, even the primary student Ye Lin could see it. It was not only because of his promising career, but also because that during the ten chaotic years, after their parents was under arrest to be criticized and rebuilt, he protected his younger brother and sister, who are Yu Yue's father and aunt, by his young body. And that's why his father and aunt seemed to have a sense of reverence and gratitude for his uncle.

Ye Lin sometimes would wonder in depression, his uncle was so nice, so nice to him, why he was not the son of his uncle.

But on his second thought, if he was his uncle's son, his father would be his uncle—that would be even more annoying! How was he gonna get along with his parents then?

However, the annoying illusion is always easy to come true.

One day in the middle of the night, Ye Lin couldn't fall into sleep, he got up to drink some water. When he passed by his parents' room, their voices came through the door left unlocked. They were not very loud, but Ye Lin still heard his name in their conversation.

He quietly went over, hid behind the door, and carefully listened to their conversation.

"Who the hell is Ye Lin's mom?"

"I don't know. My brother wouldn't talked about it, not even in death."

"I've got to say—I guess only, do you think that Ye Lin looks like a boy from Li's family?"

"What the hell…actually he does. He looks exactly as same as their third son when he was young."

"Right? People say that the nephew is always like the uncle. Is it possible that his mother is Li's daughter?"

"The elder one is nearly ten years older than my brother, and she has been married for years…but the younger one, she has a mental problem…"

"Do you know how she was when your brother took Ye Lin home?"

"How can I know that? She was always in hospital for months and no one could see her."

"So it has more possibility. Think, if his mother is a normal person, your brother wouldn't take the risk to bring him back. What would happen if his wife knows that? Isn't is safer to leave the child with his own mother than to take him home? There's got to be something that make your brother so tight-lipped."

"But she's kind of crazy. My brother can't date her…"

"She's about the same age as your brother—even a little younger. You two families used to live in the same community…it's not impossible."

"No, no, my brother wouldn't…it is impossible…stop guessing, we need go to sleep now."

"It was just a guess."

Ye Lin heard that clearly outside the room. And his mind was also as clear as the mirror.

As he thought, he's not their child. Although he didn't know who his mother was, it looked like that his real father was his uncle. By inference, he's an illegitimate child of his uncle. His uncle claimed that he's just a nephew because he didn't want his wife to know that. And that's why Ye Lin grew up with his grandparents when he was a child, and not closed to his 'parents'—they were just nominal.

Ye Lin thought about it for a long time. It was really annoying this time.

After that, he tried once to see the youngest daughter of Li when he went to his grandparents' house. Li's house was in the same yard as his grand parents', only some distance away. Grandpa Li had no wife, Ye Lin had only seen him but not his youngest daughter when he played at Li's house as a child. He heard from his grandfather that Li's youngest daughter had been crazy during the Cultural Revolution. She always had to go to the hospital because of the serious health condition.

Ye Lin had been wandering in front of Li's house several times. But he never saw Li's daughter. Sometimes grandpa Li saw him and greeted with him, he would hurriedly run away. For some reasons, he felt guilty, as if he had something to do with a dirty secret.

Ye Lin never asked anyone for the truth. His boyhood days passed away with suspicion and speculation.

After becoming an adult, his dependency and connection on his parents faded. Thus he had got over it. No matter whose child he is, his last name is always Ye. His uncle had a daughter only, so it was natural to pay attention to his nephew. Not everything in the world has to be crystal clear.

On New Year's Day of 2007, Ye Lin suffered a rare setback in his life.

He had been under arrest for eight months. It took a lot of effort for his uncle to get him out and be reinstated. The investigation into him was dropped due to the lack of evidence.

When he got out, he found out the reason of his misfortune. The man surnamed Li, who opposed his uncle and got him in prison, was the third brother of that "Li's daughter". Ye Lin saw the news about his fall. He looked at his photo again and again. With double-fold eyelids and high bridge of the nose, that man was handsome and looked like him. It was really annoying.

Ye Lin asked his uncle that why he didn't get him out earlier if all the things had been settled down already.

His uncle patted him: "you've been run amuck at society for two years, don't you think it is enough? You would be uppity if I didn't give you a lesson. Don't think that I can cover anything for you. Like this spring, if there was one misstep, you would have to spend your lifetime in prison."

"How could it be? You're too modest." Ye Lin flattered. He was confident about his uncle.

"You are too uppity to look up others. Restrain yourself a little bit, you don't need money, don't do anything dirty to get yourself in trouble. Take a long-term view, it's not worth to take risk for money only. If you dare to do that again, I'll kick your ass first before anyone else."

"Don't…are you still my uncle?" Ye Lin looked like aggrieved.

His uncle hooked up the corner of his mouth and smiled.

"I'm not your uncle." He said word by word, "if you don't do well, then don't take my surname."

Ye Lin was silent in that moment. His uncle was so serious that he was a bit scared. After a while, he realized that his uncle said that they had the same family name.

Ye Lin bowed his head in silence. Did he just admit that? Admit he's actually the son of him.

But his uncle smiled again: "I'm just kidding."

Ye Lin hesitated for a moment and asked him: "am I really your…nephew?"

The man didn't answer him, just said with a smile: "you are my child."

"You are my child. I cultivated you step by step, taught you everything I knew. You are my inheritor and the continuation of my soul. Isn't it enough?"

It is enough. Ye Lin answered in his mind.
