NEW YEAR AND AN APOCALYPSE

Chapter 25: THE SMOKE

"Did we kill them? What did we do?"

The little boy asked, he surely has no clue,

"They deserve it, the angels had helped us,

But now the food is gone, what else is a must?"

"We need water the most, but those bastards only eat and laugh,

If they were still alive, I'm sure torture won't be enough,"

"Calm down, let's ask, the one who thankfully helped us,

Ken, tell us the next thing to do, anything to do,

And we'll put you our whole trust,"

"Yes, do help us, do tell Him to send us another miracle, please,

Your words are true, and I'm sure they never miss,"

All they ever did, is mutter those little pleas.

I didn't quite hear them all,

As I was looking at the bodies on the floor,

Some put them against a wall,

"Do you guys want to do something more?"

"Feed them to the monsters, they deserve it so much,"

"So okay, now maybe we should also cut them, make them their(zombies) lunch,"

I felt sick to the core when they said that,

I wanted to hurt them too, but they're dead,

"That's so much,"

They looked at me quite shock,

"They starved us and you still pity them, oh gosh,"

"Such a hypocrite when you told us to do all this stuff,"

"I didn't mean to kill them, though half of me may have liked it,

It's overkill if you'd do so, don't you think it's not worth it?"

They began to mellow out, but their hunger gave out a sound,

"Please tell me you'd get us food,

Or we won't survive another round,"

I nodded at the lady, I counted them and they're ten,

Plus me we'd be eleven,

"Alright, but I can't promise when,"

"Sure, take your time, take as many men,"

I nodded then pointed, the toughest guys we got,

I included Mar, since to me she still looks tough,

We were 7 to go, because the others are too weak to walk,

While the others seem incompetent, and only knows how to talk.

I felt my hand shaking, as I look outside,

It never got better, and my worry is no use to hide,

I know I'm still a useless coward,

But I still need to do my best to survive.

I prayed first, because I'm still not as confident,

Made a makeshift weapon, looks kinda like a trident,

"Sir, should I stay here or keep guard?"

The little boy asked, for my regard.

I pat his head and told him to wait,

"Wait for three hours, and you'll surely eat,

But for now be a good boy, to that side, do sit,"

"Alright sir, I promise to wait,

Just make sure, none of you end as bait,"

I smiled at him and pat his head more,

I remembered my brother,

Which I so do adore.

I wonder if he's alive, is he doing well?

Although for now, it's not safe to tell.

Thinking back of myself just days ago,

I won't do this kind of things, but what do you know,

I'm suddenly leading them, even if I'm still afraid,

That what we'd do, will become an unsuccesful raid.

We climbed up the roof, complete with tools,

All we have to do, is find another house full of food,

We had to move slowly, not wanting to attract,

But with the heat and the hunger, our vision is making us wish for luck.

We smell no different from them,

We look only a little better than them,

Our hair were messy, and our lips so dry,

We wonder ourselves, how we just didn't die.

I felt my eyes water, and my senses failing everyday,

I was so lucky to be alive, but the others are they okay?

I have no news of others now, are we the last one remaining?

I have a lot of questions, but the hope for them to be answered are fading.

That's when we saw it, a house emitting smoke,

"Is that a signal?" One asked as we look,

I tried to go closer, wonder if it's just fire,

"I'll check that out, will be back after a while,"

I slowly creep closer,

And the image becomes clearer,

It was a distress signal, or so I think at that time,

So I felt more confident, "Okay guys, follow me, it's fine,"

I heard voices, humanly ones,

"Guys did you hear that? We're not the only ones!"

But as I got nearer, I felt a heavy atmosphere envelope us,

No, it wasn't hallucination, it wasn't the heat of the sun,

It was a random feeling, something that tells you, you're done,

And the more steps I take,

The more I feel the urge to,

run.
