Infection: Dying Days

Chapter 3 - Rest

"Aaah!"

The infected girl goes in for a bite!

"Not today!"

But before she did, I quickly place my left arm under her chin and try my best to keep her from biting me.

"Aaah!"

"S-so strong!"

However, it was no use!

Despite using all my strength to fend her off she slowly leaned towards me, her open mouth inching closer and closer! Are all infected like this? No wonder whoever got caught by them died, their strength is freakishly high!

Where's the shovel?

While struggling to fend off the infected girl, I desperately try to find the shovel.

Out the corner of my eye...

"There it is!"

I found the shovel, it was barely within arms reach.

"Aaah!"

It was a that moment, the infected girl was so close to my face that I could now feel her hot rancid breaths!

It's do or die time!

Stretching out my right arm with all my might, not even caring if I pull a muscle, I reach for the shovel, grabbing it's handle and…

WHOOSH!

Viscously swing at the infected girl, lodging the shovel right into her neck.

"A-aah!"

The momentum from the swing causes her to fall off me and lay beside me.

"A..aah!"

"Heh, I guess not being able to feel pain has its advantages."

Wiping away a forehead full of sweat, I said to jokingly as stare at the infected girl who, despite having blood coming from her mouth and a shovel in her neck, tries gets up.

But before she did, I cautiously walked up to her, yanked out the shovel, this made the blood that was blocked by the shovel to pour out incessantly, dying the infected girl's uniform a deep shade of red.

"Let's...end this."

"A..aah!"

Ignoring the glassy eyes of the infected girl that was seemingly staring at me, I raise the shovel and aim at the wound her neck. I'm going to decapitate her.

SLASH!

"A..ah!"

Seeing that her head didn't fly off from that, I slashed again, causing blood to splatter on me.

SLASH!

THUD!

And thankfully, on the second swing, her head rolled to the ground.

"Sigh, I'm tired. Games make it look so easy!"

Wiping away another forehead full of sweat, I mumbled to myself while staring at the decapitated body on the ground in front of me. Cutting through bone, is tough work.

Do I have time to rest?

"Aaah!"

"Aaah!"

"Aaah!"

"Of course not."

Turning my head, I see a group consisting of six infected coming my way.

"The smell of blood must've attracted them over here...I can't handle them. I need to go."

Taking in a mouthful of air, I ignored the group of infected and made my tired body run towards the first floor workshop.

Damn, I'm tired.

'B12 Workshop'

"Haa..haa..finally!"

I said tiredly when I looked at the sign above the entrance of the first floor workshop.

Ever since I killed that infected girl on the third floor, I've done nothing but run, albeit dodging and killing a few infected here and there.

"Running through...haa..two floors non stop made me tired...haa...as hell! Now I can rest."

Thinking of how good a nap would be right now, I take a deep breath and lightly knock on the door so as to not attract any infected here.

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

"Sara, David, it's me Desmond. Open the door."

I said loud enough for them to hear me through the door.

A few seconds later, I heard the sounds of stuff being removed from behind the door before it opened towards me.

"I'm glad you're….alright. What happened to you? Nevermind, get in."

"Okay."

The one who opened the door was my childhood friend, David.

He is the same age as me but a few months older. He has raven black hair and cool blue eyes that fitted well with his good looks.

In short (due to my insecurities), he's an ikemen.

"Will that hold?"

I asked worriedly as I watched David close the door and rebuilt the barricade that consisted of desks and tables stacked and wedge against each other. I don't want to run again. I'm deadass tired.

"Yeah, it should hold as long as the infected don't come in droves...Hey, where were you? We tried calling your phone but you wouldn't answer."

"Oh now your worried about me."

Is what I want to say sarcastically but held in. Now wasn't the time to start fighting. We need to survive this first.

Therefore, I said this instead.

"Let's just say, my phone became a noble sacrifice."

I said as I picked and flipped up a desk that was used as a barricade before sitting on it.

"Why are you crying?"

David said surprised as he saw me tearing up.

Smartphone, who had my many videos used for 'research purposes' and the bookmarks and images related to it, you'll surely and most dearly be missed.

"It's nothing. Let me sleep for an hour, I need to rest. Here use this."

"Huh?"

I gave David the multi purpose shovel before I laid my head down and closed my eyes. I reached my limit the moment David said that the barricade would hold, even if it was temporary, I needed rest.

Ah, I forgot to ask where Sara was...

"Zzz."

====

"Seems you fought hard huh?"

I, David Sax, said as I alternated my vision between the blood stained shovel and my splattered with blood childhood friend, Desmond who was drooling a puddle on top of the desk.

We've met in my neighborhood park when we was still in elementary school.

He would go around the playground and fight other kids to see if he could become King of The Playground. He told me he was inspired to do this after watching the entire trilogy of an old 70's mobster movie, he said he wanted to 'live like a Don'. Whatever that means.

Anyways, during the time he was trying to take over the playground, I heard about it and confronted him. After all, I was the oldest of all the kids there, which made me their leader. And because I was the leader I didn't want some random kid taking over my playground.

We fought.

And the result was a tie, since our parents came in a broke us up. He said he won but I think I won.

Well, after that incident, we became rivals. Every time we saw each other on the playground we would hold competitions and play fight.

And somehow, while we were fighting and competing against each other throughout all of elementary school, we became best friends.

"Well, I doubt we can still be best friends right now."

I said in a self deprecating way.

Things are awkward between us at the moment. What me and Sara did to him was wrong, I know that. We could've told him sooner, but we didn't. I guess we were scared about what he would do if he found out about us.

Would he break off our relationship or would he give us his approval? Deep down, I knew he would have given approval even if he felt sad about it. After all, he loves Sara just as much as I do, he wants her to be happy.

But there was always this thought of 'what if he stops being our friend' looming around in both mine and Sara's minds. I believe that was what had us hesitating...No, me hesitating.

"Well, just seeing him again made me feel relieved. I'm sure we'll come to a solution later."

KCHACK!

While I was saying of this, the sound of a door opening. Turning towards the right side of the workshop, I saw the door to the workshop supply room open and a girl walked out of it carrying a 24 inch pipe wrench, a mallet in her left hand and a 24 inch crescent wrench in her right.

The girl was Sara, my girlfriend going on four and a half months.

If it was any other girl they would have struggled a little carrying all this at one time. As expected of the star runner of track team, she's quite athletic.

"Looks like we hit the jackpot."

I said while placing the shovel on top of one of the barricade before walking over and grabbing the pipe wrench.

"Of course we did. It's workshop after all. Did Desmond ever make it here?"

Sara asked with a voice filled with worry.

"He's fine. He's over there sleep."

I stepped a little to the right so she could see Desmond sleeping in the desk.

"Thank God. I thought something happened to him since he didn't pick up his phone."

Sara said with a huge sigh of relief before quickly running up to him.

"Eh? Where did this blood come from? Is he okay?"

"He's alright, he gotten it from fighting those infected out there. He said wake him up in an hour."

"Okay. So what will we do until then?"

"Rest. When he gets up, we'll have to come up with a plan to reach the gym."

"Can the gym really hold up?"

"That's where the majority of everyone's at. We could ban together and try to fend off the infected until help comes."

The gym was where most of the students and staff that survived the sudden attack from the infected were at. Although, the numbers there are small, we can probably hold off there until help arrives.

"Or at least hope it arrives."

"What was that?"

Hearing me, Sara asks.

"Huh? Ah, it was nothing."

I'm glad she didn't hear my mumbling. I didn't want to add any more apprehension than what we got now. I'm sure, Desmond would agree with me too.

There's a chance help won't come.
