414 – The Last Battle (1)

Time flew fast.

Before we knew it,

The advent of the Sun God, D-1.

“Okay! Are you all ready?”

The Sun God Invasion Headquarters was busier than ever.

Innumerable staff were rushing around with paperwork, and countless heroes and villains issuing commands with serious expressions.

And watching all of this,

“…Wow. So, tomorrow is actually the day…”

Our EgoStream members were observing from a step away.

What they were doing right now was conducting final consultations with neighboring countries on how to protect their own territories in preparation for the battle against the Sun God.

Although our country was tasked to the EgoStream members and the Korean Association, the others were re-confirming the final instructions until the last moment.

Yes, it was a decree from the top. ‘On the day of the Sun God war, all nations will most likely be attacked by angels.’

And naturally, I was the one who issued such an order. As was always justified by the scriptures and prophecies.

I looked at Seo Eun with vacant eyes, smiled dryly, raised my hand, and spoke.

“Why, are you nervous?”

“…Nervous? I’m actually excited that the day has finally come! After tomorrow, it will all be over. Ha… it’s time to use my ultimate weapon, Deus Breaker.”

Seo Eun, who looked clearly tense yet insisted and laughed it off, stood beside Ha Yul, who also chuckled then said,

“I agree. It’s kind of like how I felt a few days before taking the college entrance exam. Nervous, but I just want it to be over.”

With that, all of us, the members of the Ghost Stream, began to comment.

“So, what if they come? We’re just gonna crush them all.”

Said Choi Se Hee, orange hair flying, with a grin and fists clenched.

“Ugh… this is annoying. I hope it ends soon.”

Seo Ja Young spoke with a nonchalant expression, hands tucked into her hoodie.

[Ha Ha Ha! Finally, I can send more friends to join my wife in the afterlife!]

The Death Knight Uncle rapped his thick black armour and declared.

“Ah. The moment of destiny for my clan is finally approaching.”

Even the Phantom, murmuring something incomprehensible with eyes closed.

The members of our Ghost Stream, are indeed reliable, without a doubt.

I never thought this day would come when we first assembled. But here we are, facing it together.

“Da In.”

“…Su Bin.”

Her gentle grin, forever warm towards me. Su Bin then said with her soft, caring voice,

“We will protect Korea. So don’t worry, go and do what you need to do. Understand?”

“…Thank you, Su Bin.”

As I thanked her, a loud voice calling for me resounded from the front.

“Ghost Tick! We need you here for the final check!”

It seems like it’s time to leave.

“…Take care. Do you understand?”

I nodded to Su Bin who was full of love and worry for me.

This would be the last time I’d be seeing the members of Ghost Stream before the Sun God war.

I hope to return safely and see them all smiling.

As I thought this, I bid everyone goodbye.

“We’ll be waiting for your safe return! You have to catch them swiftly, okay?”

“Da In. Take care. Don’t die.”

“Cough… Dain. Return safely.”

[Dain, you, my accepted warrior. Strive honorably as a warrior should for victory and return!]

…If not, people might think I’m the one fighting.

Laughing under my breath, I waved my hand, notifying everyone understood.

Just before I was about to leave.

“Mr. Dain.”

“Yes?”

Grabbing my attention for a moment was Ms. Subin.

She then whispered something very quietly when she was near me.

“After everything ends and you come back, will you give us an answer regarding what we had talked about?”

“Ah.”

Leaving me without answering my teasing words, she was sporting a mischievous smile while waving.

“Take care, Mr. Dain~!”

“hahahaha. Yes… well, I’ll be back.”

With those words, I moved my steps with employees escorting me.

Alright, let’s go.

To the final battlefield where the last fight will unfold.

***

Whooooooooosh

Somewhere in America, an open prairie.

There, I was standing on a massive cliff, facing the wind.

“Yes, everything seems to be ready.”

“Thank you, Mr. Egoistic!”

Once the agent jotted something on paper and disappeared somewhere,

I stood on the edge of the cliff, carefully looking down below.

“Sigh…”

The orange grass spread widely, a gigantic circular space unfolded with six massive new moonlight guns at the center.

That large space is the exact place where the battle with the Sun God will occur.

The control tower itself is far away from here to account for the aftermath of the fight. It’s believed to be nearby anyway.

“…..”

My hand is cold.

I stuffed my hand in my pocket and checked the plan one last time.

This is what will happen tomorrow.

Firstly, here, when the sun rises the highest, at noon. The Sun God will descend.

After that, the Sun God’s troops will launch a full-scale attack all over the world.

And here, Stardust will fight the Sun God. Fight. And will win.

Since she won even when she was much weaker in the original work.

Only after the Sun God flees and world peace is restored.

Then…

“…”

This, is a fact I have yet to share with anyone.

As the sun god is losing power at an extreme rate and is on the run, the abilities of superhumans around the world will gradually disappear along with it.

Although it may take decades for everyone’s abilities to completely erode…

Still, it’s better than everyone dying.

Better than a world where the few who will lose their abilities, just like in the original work, are scarce.

It was when I was having such thoughts.

“Egoistic.”

I heard a familiar voice behind me.

With that, I turned around with a smile.

“Stardust.”

“What were you doing?”

“I was conducting the final check.”

She, with blond hair and wearing the red and blue suit she’s always worn since the early days of her superhero career, was here to visit me.

Stardust, Shinharu.

Looking at her standing with blue eyes looking at me, I asked her something without realising.

“Stardust. Are you nervous?”

“Nervous? Um… I am. Naturally. But still…”

With that, she grinned and said to me.

“But still, because I have you, Egoistic. I know things will turn out fine regardless. So, I’m not all that nervous.”

She said, pacing around in her own world.

I looked at Stardust, who was saying such things, through somehow different eyes than usual.

A fairly new superhero. A hero without fans.

From noble mtl dot com

The A-class heroine, Stardust.

Other than her pretty blond hair, she’s not very famous.

Rather, she’s a hero who is criticised for taking tax money yet failing to protect people properly, even had her identity revealed, and was threatened by everyone.

Yet, despite all this.

She always puts the citizens before herself.

Never collapsing in front of any powerful enemy.

She’s a true hero; standing, fighting, and protecting the world even when everything else has faded away.

I really admired watching her in comics.

Perhaps, knowing that such a character could not exist in reality.

And then. The day when that comic world suddenly became a reality.

If there was one consolation for me, who had lost everything and was in despair.

It was the fact that Stardust had really become a reality.

When I lost my life and was in despair.

I decided, in this life that I had to forsake anyway, now that things have turned out like this.

In this life, I dedicate it to Stardust.

Despite being weak and derided by everyone, to her, who rushes forward foolishly, I pledge to not the path of thorns prescribed by the original story, but pave the way of flowers myself.

Even if I have to become a villain.

Even if it takes every bit of my life.

And thus, we arrived here at this moment.

Stardust has never experienced the despair she was supposed to face. Instead of receiving scorn, she became the most popular hero in Korea. Now, she’s the ray of hope that the world relies on.

It seems my role ends here.

‘What will I do after I catch the Sun God…’

As the villains will dwindle down due to weakening powers. Maybe I can travel freely with my Ego-stream colleagues. Spend a day really talking to Stardust. Maybe I could even live with her. I could go to the vacation spots that I’d been too busy to visit. It would be enjoyable to get to know Day safely and better accustom myself with the other youngsters.

And of course, I need to seriously respond to the thoughts of my Ego Stream members. …Though it looks like a lot of things might happen, but I know that those would be steps towards happiness.

And because, even if I’m not around, they’ll manage to find their happiness.

There’s no reason to hesitate anymore.

“Stardust.”

“Yes.”

“Trust me. I will defeat the Sun God or whatever there is tomorrow.”

“Alright.”

With my words, she coolly and admittedly responds, and I can’t help but wear a smile.

Yes.

It’s time to end it all now.

And just like that.

Another day passed after the final checks,

And, finally.

The fated day arrived.
