Chapter 248: Bandit Captain

“Time’s up. Let’s see how difficult a legendary quest is,” Chau Yu said on the squad channel. He even had the leisure to fetch a bamboo chair from one of the houses and made himself comfortable at the centre of the village.

No one replied to him. They were all cautiously keeping an eye out for enemies beyond the entrances. Not far behind them were groups of villagers, who were all looking in the same direction.

Three sets of footsteps could be heard simultaneously. Three shadows—to think that the massive group of bandits only sent three attackers.

Above their heads were the titles “Bandit Captain”. But… they were in orange, meaning they were epic enemies. Their levels were Level 40.

Level 40 epic bosses!

The five defenders stationed at the entrances all said on the squad channel, “They’re not sending in mobs! Three Level 40 epic bosses right away!”

The phantom of John in John’s Laboratory and John’s Secret Chamber were both Level 35 only. Regions with levels higher than the Highlands of John weren’t available yet either because most players were still at Level 35; there was no need for a Level 40 zone. Only a selected few who had their minds on nothing but levelling up could reach Level 40 soon.

In other words, Level 40 bosses didn’t even exist in the game until now, not even uncommon or rare bosses in the wilderness. Yet now, this legendary quest sent three of these monsters their way, epic-grade no less!

Amidst their surprise, the three bandit captains didn’t have the courtesy to wait for them and immediately vanished on the spot. The Assassin skill, Lurk!

Chan Ka Lok unsheathed his sword and swung it all over the place. Bloodless Bladester also grouped up with Chan Ka Lok and placed their backs against one another as he also swung his sword randomly. It might seem they were attacking out of panic, but that was the best way to deal with a lurking assassin. Once struck by an attack, the assassin would have his Lurk effect terminated.

Backstab also scaled up damage by percentage when striking from behind, making it the signature skill for instant assassination. By having their backs stuck together, they greatly reduced their chances of getting backstabbed.

When Chan Ka Lok was coming up with a countermeasure, a shadow suddenly appeared before his eyes, accompanied by the shimmer of a dagger. He instinctively lifted his sword to block the incoming attack, but the strike towards his throat was just a feint. The dagger flashed as it was withdrawn and struck him in the waist instead.

Bloodless Bladester immediately took two quick steps and swung his sword—Crescent Arc, sending a sword aura towards the bandit captain.

“Hehehe…” The bandit captain made evil laughs as he dodged the sword aura and disappeared again.

Forced Lurk!

Chan Ka Lok gulped down potions and anxiously said, “Watch out, this boss does crazy damage! I got hit by a crit on my weak spot and it took half of my Health!”

Drako Yau had already activated Frost Form. Information of his surroundings flooded into his mind as data. Suddenly, he swept Shooting Star horizontally to his side.

Clang! The bandit captain blocked the spear with his dagger, but his Lurk effect was already forcefully ended. He took two steps back, his silhouette slowly fading; he was using Forced Lurk! Drako Yau calmly thrust his left hand and fired off a dragon aura that pounced towards the bandit captain, pulling him out of his lurk again.

The dragon aura clamped onto its target and retracted like a rope. What awaited the bandit captain was a burning spear—Soaring Flames!

Greenstone scanned all around him with his frosty gaze. He flicked his palm and threw a silver needle at a vacant spot. Under Yim Ho’s awe-struck stare, the needle froze in the air while a person was slowly revealed—the needle was stuck on the person!

Yim Ho gave Greenstone a thumbs up and charged in. Roaring like a tiger, a yellow glow shrouded him and stripes of a tiger appeared on him. As the stripes manifested, his speed also increased!

Tiger Morph: Increases attack speed and movement speed. Attacks will rend the enemy and inflict bleeding.

Beast pugilists didn’t have many skills and didn’t have a single active skill, but each skill was vastly different. They fought by constantly morphing and inflicting various effects on the enemy with basic attacks, which was in a sense similar to Dumbgirl’s Dragon Subduing Chi.

The bandit captain realised he was no longer lurking and saw Yim Ho charging at him. Unfazed at all, he swung his dagger twice—Dual Slash! A metal gauntlet appeared on Yim Ho’s arms, a metallic screech resounding as he met the dagger with his gauntlets.

“Hmph!” Yim Ho grunted and morphed. The tiger stripes faded away, replaced by strands of brown hair. His arms had turned into those of a bear in no time.

Bear Morph: Increases Strength and Attack by 50%!

The pair of brown palms pummelled the bandit captain into the ground and sent him tumbling.

“This is just the beginning!” Yim Ho grinned.

Assassins were formidable for their sneaky attacks out of nowhere. Once they were visible, they weren’t that scary anymore. After all, shadows were where assassins belonged to.

Since Drako Yau had Frost Form, even the flow of air couldn’t escape his enhanced senses, so a lurking assassin was no different from walking in plain sight to him. Greenstone also had a special skill for detecting lurking enemies. Things were the worst for Bloodless Bladester and Chan Ka Lok; both of them were weaponmasters, nor did they have any abilities that could see through lurking enemies.

The bandit captains might’ve been thrashed by Drako Yau, Greenstone, and Yim Ho, but they weren’t bosses ordinary players could handle. They had every assassin skill and overwhelmingly high Attack! Their attack pattern was also very clever; they wouldn’t attack as long as their Forced Lurk was in cooldown. Drako Yau and Greenstone only made short work of them because the two could “see” lurking enemies.

Chan Ka Lok’s Health was going on a rollercoaster. The bandit captain was fixated on killing him first and only attacked him.

Chan Ka Lok was caught in a pinch from the concentrated attacks. Noticing the danger, Bloodless Bladester furrowed his brow and started circulating his internal force. Just when he was about to move in, Chan Ka Lok’s eyes suddenly glowed.

The bandit captain snuck around them and dashed in: a lurking Shadowstrike! At his current Health, Chan Ka Lok would die for certain if the bandit’s attack connected.

However, Chan Ka Lok paid it no heed and instead stepped forwards. His sword pointed to the ground, he formed a finger sword using his left index and middle finger and thrust towards the bandit!
