Bulgarian Empire

Chapter 18. The Situation in the Balkans

At the end of the 19th century, as the Austro-Hungarian Empire continued to infiltrate Serbia, people of insight in Serbia believed that if Serbia did not expand to the Aegean Sea region, it would sooner or later be annexed by the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Therefore, Serbia adopted a radical expansion policy, including a series of messy ideas including the promotion of ethnic separatism to various places, which also paved the way for the subsequent disintegration of Yugoslavia.

In addition to the Macedonian region, countries are also penetrating into other regions. The most famous ones are the "Greater Bulgaria Plan" and "Greater Serbia Plan"; of course, the "Greater Greece Plan" and "Great Negro Plan" are also indispensable.

The Greater Bulgaria Plan is a Bulgarian nationalist ideology aimed at restoring the largest territory in Bulgarian history.

Of course, the Bulgarians are not stupid enough to really want to restore the largest territory in history. When it was time to give up, they still chose to give up!

The range of goals formulated includes: the plains between the Danube and the Balkan Mountains, North and South Dobroga, Sofia, Pirot, Vranje, North Thrace, parts of East Thrace, Macedonia and other areas.

The main targets were all aimed at the Turks, and they didn't foolishly enclose all the countries such as the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Greece. Even so, it was beyond the scope of Bulgaria's ability at the time.

The Greater Serbia Plan is interesting, and it is Greater Serbiaism, a concept of national unification proposed by Serbian nationalists.

Well, the basic goal is to unify areas populated by Serbs, there are also demands on areas where Serbs are a minority.

This area is difficult to define, advocating the establishment of a larger Serb country in the western Balkan Peninsula of southeastern Europe.

It was even worse later, when the militants expanded in strength in the late 19th century, and this nation included the entire Yugoslav nation.

As far as the most basic goal is concerned, the regional area includes: Serbia, Montenegro (Mongolia), Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Macedonia, Croatia, Slovenia and so on.

According to the goals of the radicals, the small Balkan region can no longer accommodate Greater Serbia. Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, and Austria are all involved, and they are even interested in Moldova. (Not necessarily accurate, from Baidu, for reference only)

Of course, these radicals are only a minority of the minority, and they are the radicals of radicalism, which can be understood as madness!

This is not a big deal, and there are also Slavic nations who are influenced by Pan-Lafism and openly advocate the unification of the world!

You read that right, after the establishment of Yugoslavia after World War I, some people advocated the unification of Slavic nations all over the world and the establishment of a Great Slavic Empire with Serbs at its core! Even the great strategic concept of unifying the Soviet Union has come out!

Well, just take it as a joke! Which country does not have a few lunatics? In Serbia at that time, there were just a few more lunatics!

Blind nationalism without economic and military strength and international support can only bring disastrous consequences. Greater Serbiaism eventually became the trigger for the outbreak of World War I!

The Greeks still have self-knowledge. Perhaps it was the first "Greek-Turkish War" that woke up the Greek nationalists. The Great Greece project was just a dream. After shouting twice, when I felt tired, I stopped shouting!

The Montenegrin plan of the gate, the establishment of Yugoslavia was once realized, but it belongs to the united one, so it has been completed anyway, right? Maybe I felt that the result was not so wonderful, and then I became independent again!

However, in this time and space, under Ferdinand's butterfly effect, all of this has undergone a fundamental change!

Of course, these plans still exist, but as soon as the "Greater Serbia Plan" was called out, it died.

The situation in the Balkans before 1892,

Basically the same as the parallel time and space, there is not much change, the most is that the Bulgarian government has built a little more church schools outside, and the scope is wider.

After the establishment of the Bulgaria-Russia Alliance, history has taken a turning point here! First, Ferdinand provoked the arms race in the Balkans, and the economic crisis that followed was destructive, a little bit bigger!

Then, starting in 1893, due to financial reasons, the governments of Greece and Serbia were forced to stop their expansion operations in the Macedonian region. After the Paul Serbian War, Serbia directly shut down most of the Serbian schools and churches!

The time has entered 1895. Serbia, which was originally ambitious, is now licking its wounds and has no energy to come out to make troubles.

Now the most active one is Montenegro (Montenegro), who is working hard to establish the Kingdom of Montenegro!

George I of Greece was still hiding in the dark, looking for an opportunity to give the Ottoman Empire a sap, which was similar to Ferdinand's idea.

The two sides had a tacit understanding of exporting revolution to the Ottoman Empire. Although Ferdinand lit a fire, if the Greek government did not cooperate, the Greeks in Turkey would definitely not make such a fuss.

The Macedonians relied on the Serbs before 1860, and then turned to the Bulgarians. The main factor that caused this reason was promoted by the Russian Empire.

The Russians guided the Macedonians closer to Bulgaria in terms of religion and diplomacy, and the attitude of the Russian Empire had a huge impact on all Orthodox people in the Balkans!

After the alliance between Russia and Bulgaria, this influence became more obvious, and the Orthodox faith areas in the Balkans were all moving closer to Bulgaria. Taking advantage of this advantage, the Ferdinand government accelerated its penetration into the Balkans.

Romania is the one that suffers the most. Watching the expansion of the Balkan countries, Carol I has nowhere to show his ambitions, so he can only watch the excitement from the sidelines with peace of mind!

To the west are Hungary and Serbia, to Beichuan is Russia's Ukraine and Moldova, to the south is Bulgaria, and to the east is the Black Sea, surrounded by powerful enemies and nowhere to develop.

During the Baosai War, the Romanians were ready to take a share. Unfortunately, due to their relationship with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, they chose to support Serbia.

But Serbia lost too quickly, and the war ended before Romania had time to mobilize the whole country. There is no way to call his neighbor to the north the Russian Empire? And the Russian Empire happens to be an ally of Bulgaria, anyway, the Romanians dare not bet!

More than 70% of the country's main forces are deployed on the front lines of Moldova and Ukraine. No matter how confident Carol I is in his ability to use troops, he does not think that Romania's partial division can defeat Bulgaria.

Coupled with the unstable situation in Romania at that time, a new round of peasant uprisings might break out at any time, Carol I finally chose to abandon the Serbs.

... (As for the domestic situation in Ottomans, let's make up your mind! There are only four words: smoke is everywhere!)
